Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, you, like most of us, have probably been home a lot with your dog. But, as we start to venture out more often, immune system health may be increasingly on your mind – not only your immune system, but your dog’s as well. How can we keep our dogs healthy and protect them from illness? The answers are not as complicated as you’d think. Here are a few simple things you can do at home to help your dog maintain a strong, healthy immune system.

Consistent Exercise

Maintaining a fit and healthy body condition is one of the most important things you can do for your dog. Excess weight can lead to a multitude of health issues and make their bodies more susceptible to illness. Regular exercise also helps boost immune system function by increasing blood flow and circulation of immune cells, and it helps to reduce inflammation.

Proper Diet

A healthy immune system starts with a healthy, complete and balanced diet. Here are some critical ingredients to look for:

Antioxidant Vitamins: Free radicals damage cells, contributing to disease and cancer. Antioxidants stop this damage, so they are essential nutrients in a diet. Vitamins E, C and B6 are powerful antioxidants. Vitamin A is another antioxidant that also helps support healthy vision, skin and coat, in addition to a strong immune system.

Omega 3 and 6 Fatty Acids: A balance of both of these omega fatty acids is essential to dogs’ immune system health. They help maintain the body’s inflammatory process. A long-term deficiency in either omega-3 or 6 fatty acids can cause chronic inflammation, which can lead to diseases or cancer. Balanced omegas also help support dogs’ brain function and healthy skin and coat.

Fiber: It not only helps improve the digestive system and maintain a healthy weight; fiber also promotes a strong immune system. Look for natural sources of insoluble fiber, such as pumpkin, sweet potatoes, carrots and ground flaxseed.

Our new Dogswell® Nutrisca® food is a great way to add immune system support into every meal.

Treats & Supplements

To give your dog’s immune system a boost, consider feeding them supplements or treats, such as:

Immune System Treats: An easy and fun way to get immunity nutrients into your dog is to give functional treats. Dogswell Immunity System Treats, for example, give dogs the meaty flavor they crave, with real chicken, or duck as the first ingredient, plus supplementation of these important ingredients to support a healthy immune system:

  • Antioxidant vitamins A and E
  • Turmeric, a source of anti-inflammatory properties, vitamins C & B6, and fiber
  • Flaxseed oil, which is rich in omega-3 and 6 fatty acids and fiber

Fish Oil: Dog parents sometimes choose to supplement with fish oil, a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, to help balance their dogs’ omegas. Look for one that is pure and sourced from wild-caught salmon, like Dogswell Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil .

Probiotics: A large portion of your dog’s immune system is controlled by their gut, which needs to have a balance of good and bad bacteria. Giving your dog probiotics is one way that you can ensure that your dog is receiving enough good bacteria, helping to support a healthy digestive system and immune system.

Intermittent Bathing

Dogs will be dogs. They get dirty! But, some dirt and bacteria is actually ok – and even good for them! It’s important to give your dog a bath regularly and brush their teeth daily, but be careful not to bathe them too frequently, because it can dry out their skin and weaken their immune system.

A Happy Routine

Chronic stress can prohibit the immune system’s response to foreign antibodies, making the body more susceptible to illness. Dogs, like many people, enjoy routine, familiarity and knowing what’s next. When there are too many changes, like new people or places and not enough one-on-one time, dogs can get stressed, which can make them lose sleep and weaken their immune systems.

Regular Vet Visits

Your dog should be examined by your veterinarian at least once a year. This helps them stay up to date on vaccinations, enables the veterinarian to check for any changes in your dog’s health, and allows you the opportunity to discuss any questions or concerns you’ve had about your dog.

Don’t wait until your dog’s senior years to start thinking about their immune system. Helping your dog have a strong, resilient immune system is a life-long – but simple – process. And the end result is worth it – a long, happy life for your dog.
