Nutrisca Dry Dog Food Voluntary Recall

A Letter from Company CEO, Brad Casper

Dear Fellow Pet Parent:

Our number one priority is the safety of our products and the health of our canine and feline customers. We strive to make and sell only the highest quality food and treats.

During routine testing of our products, a sample obtained by the Ohio Department of Agriculture revealed the presence of Salmonella in a single 4 lb. bag of Nutrisca Chicken & Chickpea Dog Food Product. Our co-packer, Tuffy's Pet Foods, Inc. (“Tuffy’s") manufactured the product and has issued a voluntary recall on a limited quantity of Nutrisca Dry Dog Food due to possible health risks. Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

The voluntary recall is limited to the Nutrisca Chicken & Chickpea Dog Food in 4 lb. bag sizes, and only includes products identified by the below first 5 digits of the Lot Code (found on upper back of the bag) and "Best by Dates" (found on upper back of the bag). No other bag sizes or other Nutrisca dog food, cat food, biscuits/treats, supplements or other products, are involved in the recall.

If you have purchased a 4 lb. bag of the product subject to the voluntary recall (as identified above), please discontinue use of the product, discard it in a safe manner (example, a securely covered trash receptacle) and give us a call at 1-888-559-8833.

Tuffy’s has issued a press release to make our consumers like you aware of the situation. We also identified the stores that received the product, and contacted them to destroy any affected products in their possession (if any).

Why is Nutrisca voluntarily recalling this product?
During routine testing of our products, a sample obtained by the Ohio Department of Agriculture revealed the presence of Salmonella in a single 4 lb. bag of Nutrisca Chicken & Chickpea Dog Food Product. Our co-packer, Tuffy's Pet Foods, Inc. (“Tuffy’s) manufactured the product and has issued a voluntary recall on a limited quantity of Nutrisca Dry Dog Food due to possible health risks. Have there been any reports of pets getting sick from eating the voluntarily recall Nutrisca product?
No. There are currently no reported cases of illness in pets or humans.

What is Salmonella?
For more technical information about Salmonella in humans, you may refer to http://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/

How could my pet be affected by Salmonella?
Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets may only have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

What could have caused the presence of Salmonella in the voluntarily recalled Nutrisca product?
During normal manufacturing production, a blockage occurred on the line. While removing the blockage, the line became exposed to Salmonella.

What precautions is Nutrisca taking to ensure this won’t happen again?
We have a rigorous testing process in-place to ensure that all of our products are safe. Our products are tested on-site at the source of supply and then again using a certified independent 3rd party lab to ensure that they are safe and compliant with regulatory guidelines.

If my product IS NOT subject to the recall, should I take my dog to the vet? Will he/she become ill?
Since your product is not subject to the recall, there should not be any cause for alarm and there should be no reason why you should feel the need to take your dog to the vet on the basis of the Nutrisca dry food alone.
